St. James UMC was formed when a group of dedicated people gathered around a kitchen table in the Park Hills subdivision. They decided that the west side of Spartanburg needed a community of faith and friendship, a church for lifelong Methodists as well as newcomers to this tradition. On May 11, 1955, the church was officially established. Eleven days later, on May 22, the first worship service was held.
From that initial worship service of 73 people, generations of faithful followers have known and served Jesus as a part of St. James United Methodist Church.
Today the congregation of St. James extends from Spartanburg’s east side to Greer. Our membership has grown. The number of neighborhoods we serve has expanded. Still, St. James remains passionately committed to knowing and serving Jesus is whatever we do, wherever we are, however we are able.
